Trust Your Intuition
Trusting your intuition is one of the most difficult things to learn how to do as an adult. Children, especially toddlers, are able to trust their intuition whole-heartedly. They learn quickly what is makes them feel good and what makes them feel bad. They trust their stomachs to tell them when they are hungry or when they are full. Their bodies tell them what foods to eat, and they eat intuitively so long as no one interferes.
Intuitive eating aims to bring us back to our toddler selves, at least where food is concerns. This nutrition approach was developed by Evelyn Tribole, MS, RD and Elyse Resch, MS, RD, FADA and is featured in their book Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works. Instead of the traditional Westernized approach to nutrition and “dieting”, Evelyn and Elyse encourage their readers and clients to eat intuitively.
So what does that mean, to eat intuitively? It means to trust your mind and your body to tell you when you are hungry or full, to tell you when something is satisfying or not, and to let you know what foods you should eat. It means throwing away all of your “diets” and rejecting that mentality. This approach is not about counting calories, or calculating exchanges. It is about eating what you want, when you want, however you want. This concept can seem almost impossible, even scary to some people. But when you really give it a chance and approach it in the correct manner, it is something that really works!
