Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2012 Recap

During Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2012, Inner Door Center® was proud to have several of our staff and students represent Reconnect with Food® and Inner Door Center® at events around the state.

Candlelight Vigil at University of Michigan: Dearborn – 2/20/2012

Sara, one of our MSW interns, was a presenter at a candlelight vigil for ED awareness week at University of Michigan: Dearborn on Monday February 20th, 2012.  The candlelight vigil was sponsored by Delta Phi Epsilon, whose philanthropy is working with ANAD to promote eating disorders awareness and prevention.  During the one hour presentation, Sara led an awareness workshop for students and the community.  She introduced participants to eating disorders; the signs and symptoms; and what to do if you are concerned that a friend, family member, or you have an eating disorder.  Some attendees shared their own experiences with eating disorders.  The presentation ended with a Q & A session and a mindfulness exercise (seated meditation).

Eating Disorder Awareness Week Presentation at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak – 2/29/12

Samara Johnson, our Inner Door Center® Foundation Development Director, represented Inner Door Center® at a presentation hosted by Beaumont Hospitals on Wednesday February 29th, 2012.  Samara spoke about her own treatment experience.  She served as an example to the audience and fellow speakers as Samara clearly did her healing work through effective therapy.  Samara was a good example of someone who stuck with their treatment plan and saw it through to the end.  She also shared about directing her passion for art to create a fundraiser – Stereotype Event – for ED awareness.  Money raised from the event will be used:

  • To provide a far-reaching educational network for those who struggle with Eating Disorders along with their friends and family.
  • To assist with current national political advocacy efforts to include the diagnosis of eating disorders, across the spectrum, in all mental health parity legislation, and to increase advocacy efforts for mental health parity legislation specifically in Michigan.
  • To provide a clinic to assist those who are denied insurance benefits when it is medically necessary that they receive treatment.  Learn more about the event here.

Nutrition Presentation at Central Michigan University – 3/1/12

Megan Smith, our registered dietitian, spoke to students at Central Michigan University in the Student Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics on Thursday March 1st, 2012.  Her presentation included an introduction of the Reconnect with Food® programs and the nutrition approaches used at Inner Door Center®.  Students in attendance were interested in the field of dietetics and learning more about how Megan works with clients using intuitive and mindful eating techniques.

It was another successful Eating Disorders Awareness Week for Inner Door Center®!  But our promotion of ED awareness and prevention never stops… we look forward to continuing to be a spokesperson for all those who suffer or have suffered.  Your thoughts and ideas are what inspire us, so please keep commenting and responding to our posts.  We are here for you.
